Aspects 429 Hummingbird Feeder

The Aspects 429 is one of our favorite hummingbird feeders. Aspect feeders in general are well made and made in America. This particular feeder holds 12 oz of nectar. It also has a built in “Ant Moat.”

If you are not familiar with an Ant Moat, the concept is simple. Ants love sugar water and what is nectar? Sugar Water (1 part sugar to 4 parts water). If you look at the picture you can follow that brass hanger down to the unit. Where the brass hanger hits the unit is a small well for regular water. Turns out ants can’t swim so as long as there is water in there the ants can’t get to the nectar. Here’s an interesting point this type of built in Ant Moat doesn’t kill the ants they just won’t cross it. In fact, once they see the water they tell all of their friends to turn around and get off the pole.

Aspects Nectar Bee Guards 384

So why would you need an Aspects “Nectar Guard Tip”? The simple answer if bees don’t tend to bother you – you don’t need them. But bees love sugar water, and what is nectar? 1 part sugar to 4 parts water! So the bees will eventually be attracted to you feeder.

If you think that is going to bother you then Aspects has created a solution for their own feeders. These little rubber tips you see in the picture above are to be placed on the inside of the feeder. The have a small self-sealing cut in them. When the hummingbird drink from the port his/her tung will go through the slit to get to the nectar. With these on the nectar can’t leak, or even leach to the top of the feeder. Thus… bees never know there is nectar in the unit. These are well made, and I just clean them when I’m cleaning the feeder. No need to replace throughout the season.
