Bella the Hummingbird

I found this live feed of an Allen’s Hummingbird that continuously nests in the same backyard every year. The California homeowner named her “Bella” and has placed a live cam for everyone to enjoy.

Explore.org picked up the live feed and you can watch it yourself here: http://explore.org/live-cams/player/bella-hummingbird-nest

The site even lets you take a picture of the birds and download them to your device.  Here’s a shot I took of Bella feeding one of the chicks.

Want to know what a hummingbird nest looks like?

Here’s a good shot I found on Twitter of a hummingbird sitting on a nest.

Just to give you a thought about the size of the nest, this hummingbird will be no larger than 3.5″.  Hummingbirds bind the exterior of the nest with spider’s silk. The interior can be lined with animal hair and plant down.

The male hummingbird spends a few seconds aiding in reproduction then the rest consisting of building the nest, nesting on the eggs, and caring for the young falls to the female.
